Gürsu, Osmanlı döneminde verimli Bursa Ovası'nın doğusunda ipekböcekçiliği ve meyve tarımıyla kurulmuş köklü bir yerleşimdir.
Eski adı 'Cingil' veya 'Değirmenler' olarak bilinen ilçe, bol su kaynakları ve bereketli toprakları nedeniyle Cumhuriyet döneminde 'Gürsu' adını almıştır.
