The Seal of Victory of the Turkish War of Independence: History of the Armistice

After the Great Offensive and the liberation of Izmir with the Battle of the Commander-in-Chief, the Turkish army advanced towards the Straits and Istanbul; England, France and Italy had to request a ceasefire. Mudanya Beach was chosen as the neutral area where the talks will be held.

In this mansion, which witnessed tough diplomatic negotiations between 3-11 October 1922, the Turkish Grand National Assembly Government was represented by Western Front Commander İsmet Pasha (İnönü). With the Mudanya Armistice signed in the morning of October 11, 1922, Eastern Thrace, Istanbul and the Straits were saved with a diplomatic victory without firing a single bullet, paving the way for the Lausanne Peace Treaty, which is the title deed of the Republic of Turkey.

Architecture of the Mansion and Works Exhibited in the Museum

The museum building was built as a wooden-frame seaside mansion by the Russian-born merchant Aleksandr Ganyanof in the late 19th century. The white mansion attracts attention with its elegant shuttered windows, balcony over the sea and Art Nouveau interior wooden decorations.

• Historical Peace Hall: The large marble table with green cloth where the armistice negotiations were held and the treaty was signed, the chairs used in the negotiations and the original treaty texts are exhibited.
• İsmet İnönü's Study and Rest Room: The room that İsmet Pasha used as his headquarters for 8 days, contains his personal belongings, bed and communication devices from which telegraph officers reported to Ankara day and night.
• Allied Powers Delegation Rooms: The rooms used by British General Harington, French General Charpy and Italian General Mombelli have been preserved with furniture of the period.

The museum is located on the seaside promenade on 12 Eylül Street, in the center of Mudanya, the coastal district of Bursa.

• By Ferry from Istanbul: After landing at BUDO Mudanya pier, you can reach the museum in just 8 minutes by walking west along the coastal promenade.
• By Bus from Bursa Center: You can directly reach Mudanya Pier and Armistice Square with the yellow buses numbered 1002 departing from Bursa Organize Sanayi or 1/M departing from Bursaray Emek metro station.
• Parking: There are municipal parking areas on the coastal street around the museum.
